On March 16, 2026, the Israeli Defense Forces announced "limited and targeted ground operations" in southern Lebanon. A second division deployed south of the Litani River. Defense Minister Israel Katz described the objective: "Just as was done against Hamas in Rafah, Beit Hanoun and the terror tunnels in Gaza." He added that displaced Lebanese residents south of the Litani — specifically identifying Shia residents — would not be permitted to return until the safety of northern Israel was guaranteed.

Between March 2 and March 16, Israeli strikes in Lebanon killed at least 886 people, including 111 children and 38 health workers, and wounded 2,141, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health. More than one million Lebanese — roughly one in five people in the country — registered as displaced. Israeli evacuation orders extended more than 40 kilometers from the border, north of the Litani River, covering the southern third of the country.

A joint statement from France, Canada, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom warned that a significant ground offensive would have "devastating humanitarian consequences" and "must be averted." It was not averted. The statement landed and the operation continued. Five NATO allies issued a public objection and it changed nothing about the pace or scale of the invasion.

That diplomatic failure is the first thing worth noting, because it makes the next two fronts legible.
Since December 2024, Israel has occupied the full UN-monitored buffer zone in the Golan Heights — Syrian sovereign territory under international law. Prime Minister Netanyahu declared the occupation indefinite. The IDF voided the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. Haaretz reported the military preparing new outposts and security zones extending 65 kilometers from the border, deep into southern Syria. The Israeli cabinet approved an $11 million plan to expand services to existing settlements and fund new settler migration to the Golan. By December 2025, the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project documented more than 600 Israeli attacks across Syria since the invasion — averaging nearly two per day. In January 2026, reports documented Israeli aircraft spraying carcinogenic herbicides on Syrian farmland and forests in the Golan at concentrations dozens of times above normal usage.

Lebanon is a new ground war. Syria is a sustained occupation accelerating under cover of one. But the third front is the one where the mechanism is most exposed, because it has no operational connection to the Iran conflict at all.
On March 17, 2026, the UN Human Rights Office published a report covering the twelve months through October 2025. The findings: Israel forcibly displaced more than 36,000 Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, a scale the report called "previously unseen." Israeli authorities advanced or approved 36,973 housing units in East Jerusalem and approximately 27,200 in the rest of the West Bank. An unprecedented 84 new settlement outposts were established in a single reporting period, bringing the total past 300.

The report documented 1,732 incidents of settler violence resulting in casualties or property damage — up 24 percent from the previous year. Its conclusion: settler violence operated "in a coordinated, strategic and largely unchallenged manner, with Israeli authorities playing the central role in directing, participating in or enabling this conduct." The displacement, it said, "appears to indicate a concerted Israeli policy of mass forcible transfer throughout the occupied territory, aimed at permanent displacement, raising concerns of ethnic cleansing."

Two days later, on March 19, a group of UN special rapporteurs issued a statement that named the connection explicitly: "Against the backdrop of the US-Israel aggression of Iran and Lebanon, Israel is escalating ethnic cleansing and full annexation of the West Bank."

The speed of the administrative machinery behind this expansion is where the religious settler movement's role becomes visible. On February 15, the Israeli cabinet transferred land registration authority in the West Bank from the civil administration to the Ministry of Justice — a move Amnesty International described as advancing "full annexation." Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who controls the civil administration in the West Bank and has publicly displayed a map of "Greater Israel" that includes the West Bank, Jordan, and parts of Lebanon and Syria, oversees the policy architecture making this possible. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who has granted firearm licenses to settlers in occupied East Jerusalem, told the public that "Jews are above the law in the West Bank." The 84 new outposts in a single year are not security infrastructure. They are the physical expression of a territorial vision that predates the war by decades and is now being executed by cabinet ministers who hold that vision as doctrine.

This is what distinguishes Israel's position in the current period from every other player. Russia profited from the disruption. China positioned before it and leveraged during it. North Korea tested while the deterrent redeployed. Each exploited a window created by the war.
Israel is not exploiting the window. Israel is co-creating it. The war in Iran is a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation. The Lebanon ground invasion is a direct extension of that operation. And under the combined umbrella of both, a territorial program that has no connection to Iran — annexation of the West Bank, consolidation of the Golan, settlement expansion driven by a religious-nationalist coalition now holding cabinet authority — is accelerating at a pace the international community has formally identified and formally failed to stop.
Five NATO allies issued a joint statement warning against the Lebanon invasion. The UN documented the displacement of 36,000 Palestinians and called it ethnic cleansing. The UN voided Disengagement Agreement in the Golan drew no enforcement. Each objection was registered. None was acted upon. The war absorbed the diplomatic bandwidth that would otherwise constrain these moves.
The question is not whether Israel is expanding on three fronts simultaneously. That is documented. The question is what condition made it possible for five allied governments and the United Nations to identify what was happening in real time and still fail to alter the trajectory.
The answer is 28 days old and still burning.
